Women for Justice and Equality: Transforming Lives in Gurei

Rakela Christopher, a Gurei, North Block Two resident, shares her transformative experience at the women and girls-friendly space established by Women for Justice and Equality. Since its opening, this center has become a beacon of hope and empowerment for women and girls in the community.

“From the day this space was opened, it has brought many positive changes to our lives. We have gained numerous benefits from it. Before joining the center, living in peace with our husbands and children was a struggle. However, my home and life have changed significantly since becoming a part of this space. Now, there is peace in my family, and my relationship with my children has grown stronger. We have learned how to manage our children properly, even as they transition into adulthood.”

Rakela highlights one of the most impactful lessons she has learned—breaking the silence on gender-based violence (GBV). “We were taught never to keep quiet when bad things happen to us, including GBV. We have also learned how to respond when we hear about GBV cases in our community and how to support survivors. This knowledge has empowered us to take action and bring about change.”

In addition to advocacy and empowerment, the center has helped Rakela embrace gender equality within her own home. “Before, I did not fully understand the importance of treating my children equally, but now I know that both girls and boys deserve the same opportunities, including education. Even children with disabilities have the right to learn and thrive. This center has opened my eyes to so many things, and I am truly grateful for this opportunity.”

Rakela encourages other women in the community to take advantage of this space. “To all the women who have not yet joined, I strongly urge you to do so. This center truly helps a lot. It provides us with knowledge, skills, and a supportive community that uplifts and empowers us.”

The Women for Justice and Equality organization continues to create safe spaces where women and girls can learn, grow, and advocate for their rights. Through their efforts, communities like Gurei are witnessing positive changes, ensuring a more just and equitable future for all.

Mrs. Koleta Aziza

Koleta Aziza, a resident of Gurei, North Block One, also shares her experience at the center. “One of the best things I have gained from this space is learning English and how to express myself confidently. I have also learned numbers, my age, and many other essential skills. This women- and girl-friendly space has taught me about my rights—both at home and in the community—and how to defend myself when faced with challenges.”

Koleta appreciates the guidance she has received from other women in the space. “Whenever I come here, I meet women who advise me on how to live a peaceful life. Before, we were stranded, not knowing which authorities to approach when facing problems. Thanks to the Women for Justice and Equality organization, I now understand where to seek help.”

She also emphasizes the personal growth she has experienced. “I have learned how to take care of my children better and how to communicate with my husband about my needs. This space has given me the confidence to advocate for myself and my family.”

Ms. Sonia Basha

Sonia Basha, a resident of Gurei, Block Three, expresses her gratitude for being a member of the women- and girl-friendly space. “I would like to appreciate the Women for Justice and Equality staff for all they have contributed. We, as girls, have benefited so much since the center was opened. It has created a safe environment for us here in Gurei, protecting us and preventing violence, including GBV. This is what makes this center so important.”

Sonia highlights the educational support provided by the center. “Women and girls have learned so much here. We were taught about adolescence and sexual education, which has helped us as young girls both at home and in school. We also learned how to handle GBV cases, and this center has become a safe space for us to report incidents when we face GBV-related problems.”

She urges parents to take advantage of this resource. “Since I have benefited so much, I encourage our parents to send their girls to this center. It is a safe and friendly place where we can learn, grow, and be protected.”

The women of Gurei now stand stronger, more informed, and united in their pursuit of justice and equality. Thanks to the Women for Justice and Equality organization, they have found a haven where they can learn, share, and support one another. As more women and girls continue to join the space, the ripple effect of empowerment spreads, creating a community where every woman has a voice and every girl has a future filled with possibilities.
