Breaking the Silence: A Day of Awareness at Good Hope Secondary School

Last week, the WOJE Raja Team stepped into the classrooms of Good Hope Secondary School with a mission to educate, empower, and encourage action against rape and sexual violence.
As we gathered with the students, the atmosphere was one of curiosity and concern. Many had heard stories, some had questions, and others had never spoken about the issue at all. But as the session began, something shifted. Silence turned into dialogue. Fear turned into understanding.
We discussed the critical importance of reporting rape cases within 72 hours; not just as a legal step, but as a life-saving measure. Students were shocked to learn that early medical support can prevent HIV, unwanted pregnancies, and treat injuries or infections that may not be immediately visible.
But it wasn't just about the medical side. We opened up honest conversations about the psychological trauma, social stigma, and physical consequences that survivors often face, especially in communities where shame silences victims. The students listened closely, asked thoughtful questions, and even shared their reflections.
What stood out most was their eagerness to be part of the solution. Many expressed a desire to support their peers, challenge harmful beliefs, and speak out against gender-based violence in their homes and neighborhoods.
By the end of the session, we didn't just leave with feedback and recommendations; we left with hope. Hope that this generation is ready to stand up for justice, protect one another, and help create a safer South Sudan for all.
Together, we are breaking the silence.
