International Labour Day Message from Women for Justice and Equality (WOJE)
On this International Labour Day, we honor the strength, resilience, and determination of the South Sudan women who wake up every day to work tirelessly to earn a living, educate their children, and provide for their families despite immense challenges.
To the market vendors, farmers, teachers, caregivers, entrepreneurs, and all women in every corner of our country: your labor sustains our communities and builds the future of South Sudan. Your courage in the face of economic hardship does not go unnoticed.
However, we must also speak the truth. The burden placed on women is too heavy. High and multiple taxes are crippling women’s small businesses, limiting growth, and undermining economic empowerment. Many women are working hard, yet struggling to move forward.
We call upon the Government of South Sudan to take urgent and meaningful action:
- To create an enabling economic environment where women can thrive, not just survive
- To review and reduce excessive taxation on small-scale businesses
- To ensure security so women can work without fear
- To invest in accessible, quality education and healthcare services
- To implement policies that genuinely support women’s economic empowerment and community development
Empowering women is not charity, it is a necessity for national growth, stability, and prosperity.
Today, we stand in solidarity with every working woman. Your labor matters. Your voice matters. Your future matters.
Happy International Labour Day.
